The Government has appointed Des O'Malley, former minister and founder of the Progressive Democrats party, to the position of alternate director of the London-based European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Mr O'Malley, 64, retired last year from the Dáil, where he had represented a Limerick constituency for more than 30 years.
He served in the Department of Justice, and a number of Trade, Industry and Commerce ministries.
He established the Progressive Democrats in 1985 after a series of clashes with then Taoiseach and leader of Fianna Fáil party, Charles Haughey.

Mr O'Malley has represented Ireland on the board of the Reconstruction and Development Bank for the past six years. He takes up his new post in July.
