O'Keeffe readmitted to Fianna Fail

Maverick Cork East TD Ned O'Keeffe was tonight readmitted to the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party.

Maverick Cork East TD Ned O'Keeffe was tonight readmitted to the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party.

The rebel deputy dramatically resigned last November in protest at the Government's health policies.

Government Chief Whip Tom Kitt proposed that he be allowed back into the party fold at this evening's Parliamentary Party meeting.

It emerged earlier this month that Mr O'Keeffe had written to Mr Kitt requesting he be readmitted.

"Minister Kitt informed the meeting that he had met with Deputy O'Keeffe and reiterated to him the responsibility attached to parliamentary party membership," a Fianna Fáil spokesperson said.

"The Chief Whip also said Deputy O'Keeffe was totally committed to the full disciplines of the party."

A Fianna Fáil veteran, Deputy O'Keeffe broke ranks with the party last November when he called for Ms Harney's resignation over her handling of the crisis facing the country's breast cancer services.

He unexpectedly announced he was resigning the party whip before a vote of no confidence was taken against her in the Dáil.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said at the time he hoped Deputy O'Keeffe would return to the party.

Mr Kitt said tonight he looked forward to welcoming him back at next week's meeting.
