Engineers from the car manufacturers Volvo are expected in Killarney today to examine the car in which the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Mr Ó Cuív, was injured in a collision on Monday night. Anne Lucey reports.
They want to determine why it burst into flames shortly after impact. Fire officers at the scene believe the severe impact along with a fairly full petrol tank might have contributed to the car going on fire.
Gardaí in Co Kerry are continuing to investigate the causes of the accident near Killarney involving the Minister and two American tourists.
Mr Ó Cuív suffered shock, bruising, a laceration and a broken finger. His secretary was in hospital last night, suffering from severe bruising.
The female passenger in the rental car is in a stable condition while her husband is still in intensive care.
