RTE has appointed Ms Ann Marie O'Callaghan, a former producer on Radio Ireland, as its first head of Radio 1. She will have full editorial control over all Radio 1 content, writes Michael Foley, Media Correspondent.
Ms O'Callaghan (32), of Passage West, Co Cork, is a graduate in music of UCC and the Cork School of Music. She has worked as a producer for Britain's Classic FM, and BBC Radio 3, 4 and 5, before returning home to join Radio Ireland earlier this year.
She devised and produced Radio Ireland's Entertainment Today. However, she and the presenter, Mr Phillip Boucher-Hayes, were let go when the station realised its audience was not growing. She returned to the BBC 3 drive-time programme.
Until now responsibility for Radio 1 content rested directly with the Director of Radio or the heads of the various departments.
