THE STATE saw the highest number of births recorded last year since 1896, despite the clouds of recession.

Some 75,065 births were registered in the 26 counties last year, although many of these babies were conceived in 2007, before the effects of the downturn began to be felt.

This was an increase of 4,445 on the previous year, and an increase of more than 10,000 on 2006 figures.

The figures are contained in the Central Statistics Office’s Vital Statistics, Fourth-Quarter and Yearly Summary report 2008 released yesterday. The rise in births was welcomed by Minister for Social and Family Affairs Mary Hanafin, who said a younger workforce was needed to supplement pension payments.
