UP to 100 people could still be alive if a simple series of measures to curb the carnage on Ireland's roads had been implemented, the Progressive Democrats environment spokesperson, Ms Mairin Quill, claimed yesterday.

"There is much that could be done to reduce the unacceptably high levels of road fatalities in Ireland. All it requires is political will on the part of the Minister for the Environment."

Ms Quill said speeding had been identified as one of the major factors in road accidents. "Yet despite this evidence, Minister Howlin has done little to ensure that speed limits are enforced."
