Crime levels in Northern Ireland are down 6 per cent since last April, police said today.

There were more detections for sectarian offences and a 50 per cent reduction in the number of road fatalities.

PSNI chief constable Matt Baggott said the force as the lowest overall crime figures compared to its most similar police services in the United Kingdom.

More than 600 additional officers have been assigned to frontline neighbourhood and response policing roles since June 2009. However 150 officers are being reassigned to guard police stations with the ending of the Full Time Reserve in March.

There was a 50 per cent reduction in the number of deaths on the roads, an increase in sectarian crime detections - up 12.4 per cent, and a reduction in antisocial behaviour - down 4.8 per cent.

The number of non-domestic violence with injury crimes has been on a downward trend for the last year (down 11.9 per cent), as has the number of non-domestic burglaries (down 14.8 per cent).
