Nokia has unveiled its multimedia messaging (MMS) package at the Nokia Mobile Internet Conference in Barcelona.
This is the first time the advanced messaging capabilities of MMS have been shown over a live network with the Nokia multimedia messaging platform.
Delegates were given a first-hand demonstration of the end-to-end capabilities of multimedia messaging, which can include advanced messaging services such as the sending of digital images, graphics and sounds between mobile terminals.
To demonstrate some of these services at the Nokia Mobile Internet Conference, Nokia used a Nokia MMSC (Multimedia Service Centre), connected to Telefónica Móviles, the Spanish mobile network operator.
The new gadget, the Nokia 7650, which will be commercially available in six months, is a camera and a phone and is priced at 550 euros.
"Multimedia messaging will be pivotal in the future of mobile services by setting the stage for even more advanced services to come," said Mr Félix González Quesada, managing director, Customer Operations, Nokia Networks.
"We feel that - based on the success of short message service - there is a ready-made market for sending messages made up of text with images, video and other media".
Telefónica Móviles chairman and chief executive Luis Lada said: "This technology will be one of the drivers of the mobile telephony industry in the near future".
