Phone maker Nokia has apologised after it emerged an advertisement carrying video footage that seemed to have been filmed using its new smartphone had been simulated using different equpment.

The revelation regarding Nokia's Lumia 920 phone came after the Verge tech website spotted a window reflection that revealed a cameraman holding what appeared to be an SLR camera.

In the ad, a man is shown filming a woman using the Nokia Lumia 920 while both ride bicycles. The footage cuts from professionally filmed footage, featuring the pair, to what appears to be the video captured by the man's Nokia device.

A split-screen sequence shows what the smartphone's footage would look like with and without the company's optical image stabilisation (OIS) feature.

A headline on the Verge website reads: "Nokia's new PureView ad is amazing, too bad it's faked".

In a blog post the Finnish company said it should have "posted a disclaimer".

"Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but we should have posted a disclaimer stating this was a representation of OIS only. This was not shot with a Lumia 920. At least, not yet. We apologize for the confusion we created."
