No rival has emerged within the SDLP to challenge Mr Mark Durkan's candidacy for the party leadership.

No rival has emerged within the SDLP to challenge Mr Mark Durkan's candidacy for the party leadership.

Nominations for the positions of leader and deputy leader close at 5 p.m. today, following announcements from party leader Mr John Hume and deputy leader Mr Seamus Mallon that they would step down in November.

Six contenders had declared for the position of deputy leader yesterday: Ms Br∅d Rodgers, Mr Sean Farren, Ms Patricia Lewsley, Mr Denis Haughey, Ms Margaret Ritchie and Mr Alban Maginness.

The party chairman, Mr Alex Attwood, said the list of candidates illustrated the "depth and strength" of the SDLP. "They are all strong figures and this will be an exciting election for the party."

He said the fact that Mr Durkan remained unopposed "confirms that he is seen to be the natural leader of his generation". Ms Rodgers, is widely regarded as the front runner for deputy president.

The poll is expected to open on November 9th.
