The head of the UN nuclear watchdog agency said today that two months ofinspections in Iraq have not proved that Baghdad has attemptedto revive its nuclear arms programme.
"We have found no evidence that Iraq has revived its nuclearweapons programme since the elimination of the programme in the1990s," International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mr MohamedElBaradei told the United Nations Security Council.
However, he said that Iraq needs to provide more informationabout its pre-1991 nuclear arms programme, its alleged attemptto acquire uranium and other issues.
"Barring exceptional circumstances and provided there issustained cooperation by Iraq, we should be able within the nextfew months to provide credible assurance that Iraq has nonuclear weapons programme," he said.
ElBaradei's speech was his two-month progress report onnuclear weapons inspections in Iraq.
