Traffic in Dublin city moved quite well in all areas yesterday morning , said Dublin Corporation, as 60,000 extra cars of the parents of returning schoolchildren increased congestion.
Mr Brendan O'Brien, head of Dublin Corporation's traffic control system, said there were no particular problems on any routes. He said there was not a large increase in traffic since last Monday.
A spokeswoman for AA Roadwatch said there was a "notable increase" in traffic on the city's roads. The return to school was staggered, with some returning last week. The spokeswoman said there were delays, but congestion was not as bad last week.
"The weather did not help either. Many people left earlier," she said.
The volume of vehicles travelling south on the M50 from the toll bridge to the Naas road exit was very heavy between 8 a.m. and 8.30 a.m.
AA Roadwatch said the traffic also progressed very slowly on all major corridors, including the Stillorgan Road, the Rock Road, and the Swords Road all the way through Drumcondra into town was very heavy. All the usual "rat-runs", short cuts taken through residential areas, were very busy.
Particularly congested yesterday morning was the N11 between Rathnew and Ashford, Co Wicklow, said the spokes woman.
