A hi-tech company based along the peace line in west Belfast is set to double its workforce.

Andor Technology is investing more than £6 million in new premises, equipment and processes to expand operations at its Springvale Business Park base.

The locally-owned company, which employs 83 staff in Belfast and 20 sales staff in the US, Japan and Europe, expects to employ an extra 87 staff in the city over the next three years.

Andor designs, develops and manufactures specialist scientific cameras. Last summer it won the award of Northern Ireland's top exporter.

The investment, which has been backed by the business agency, Invest Northern Ireland, will provide increased manufacturing space and additional space for research and development.

Announcing the expansion, Mr Ian Pearson, minister responsible for enterprise, trade and investment in Northern Ireland, said: "World-class companies such as Andor enhance Northern Ireland's reputation as a global centre of excellence in the leading edge technology required for the growing life sciences market."

"This major investment will help it to achieve ambitious growth targets it has set for itself which are based on continuing product innovation and development," he added.

Andor Technology has gone from strength to strength after originally being formed as a spin out from research at Queen's University Belfast's Physics Department.

Dr Hugh Cormican, managing director of the company, said: "Our objective is to become recognised as a market leader in specialist scientific cameras for the nano-technology and life sciences industries."

He said the company would continue to invest in R&D and was strengthening its sales and marketing team around the world.
