The protest was in support of prisoners at Maghaberry prison in Co Antrim who have been on a form of dirty protest over prison conditions since Easter. A settlement was struck on Thursday, leading to the street protest being cancelled yesterday.
Derry PSNI Chief Supt Stephen Martin greeted the decision not to protest claiming it was a “positive development” in advance of today’s parade which will attract more than 10,000 marchers and supporters.
Cork residents told not to drink water
Three estates with a total of 100 households in Cobh, Co Cork, will be unable to use their drinking water supply for up to six months after high levels of lead were uncovered. Residents of Belmond Place, Park Terrace and Aileen's Terrace have been advised not to drink, boil or use tap water during food preparation in the meantime. The supply is safe for bathing, showering and washing clothing and dishes.
