A Scottish MP, Mr John McFall (53), arrived in the North yesterday to take up his post as the new Health and Education Minister at the Northern Ireland Office.
He takes over the portfolio previously held by Mr Tony Worthington, who lost his position in the recent British cabinet reshuffle.
Mr McFall arrived at his offices to meet staff and be briefed by officials.
The Secretary of state, Dr Mo Mowlam, welcomed Mr McFall to his new post.

"His wide experience, especially in education will be very valuable," she said.
