The new board of the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been announced with the outgoing chairman being retained in his position.
The Minister for Labour, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Mr Tom Kit, made the announcement today, thanking the outgoing board for their work, especially in relation to workplace bullying and safety in the construction industry.
Mr Frank Cunneen will continue to chair the board for the next three-year term. Mr Sylvester Cronin is to replace Mr Joe Hegarty of IBEC as vice-chairman. Mr Hegarty will remain on the board.
New appointees include Ms Louise O’Donnell of IMPACT representing employees, while Mr Desmond J Gilroy and Ms Sue Corbett are the two new Minster’s nominees.
Mr Kitt described the level of accidents and deaths in the workplace as unacceptably high, and said the main challenge for the new board was to develop new approaches to health and safety against a back-drop of changes in the labour market and the economy.
The HSA monitors compliance with legislation in the workplace and has powers to bring prosecutions.
