TWO new stations, new rolling stock and the development of "park and ride" facilities are among a £17 million package of DART developments approved by Mr Michael Lowry.

The Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications announced yesterday that he had approved the allocation of funding under the Operational Programme for Transport, for the package of measures.

They include a new station at Barrow Street, the refurbishment of Kilbarrack station, the opening of a new Maynooth line station at the old Drumcondra station. This will also serve Croke Park.

The new station at Barrow Street will fill the gap between Pearse Street and Landsdowne Road and is expected to be used by around 2,500 passengers a day.

The funding will also be used to buy additional DART rolling stock and develop "park and ride" sites along the corridor.

The Government will apply to the European Regional Development Fund for 65 per cent of the total cost of the measures.

Meanwhile funding has been approved for a new railway station in Co Kildare outside Kilcock village, at a cost of about £250,000. Announcing the development yesterday Mr Emmet Stagg, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications, said allocation under the Operational Programme for Transport had been approved.

The station will be built on a greenfield site below the canal and road/railway and Mr Stagg said he would hold public meetings in the next month to show plans for the station. He said the station was expected to be operating early next year.
