New Department of Education head

Seán Ó Foghlú has been appointed the new secretary general of the Department of Education and Skills.

Seán Ó Foghlú has been appointed the new secretary general of the Department of Education and Skills.

Mr Ó Foghlú has been an assistant secretary general in the department with responsibility for the planning and building unit in Tullamore.

From 2001 to 2008 he led the establishment of the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland, and was the authority’s first chief executive. In this role he led the development and implementation of the National Framework of Qualifications.

He was educated at St Patrick’s College, Knock, in Belfast, and holds a degree in early and modern Irish and a research master’s in modern Irish from Trinity College Dublin. He replaces Brigid McManus. The department said yesterday Ms McManus will receive a net lump sum of €221,657 and an annual gross pension of €112,694. She is waiving a severance payment of €126,817.
