The number of new private cars licensed for the time in Ireland rose 72.7 per cent in April compared with the same month last year, the Central Statistics Office said today.

A total of 9,599 new private cars were registered last month, compared with 5,558 in April 2009.

The number of new goods vehicles registered was also up, rising 8.1 per cent to 1,070.

In total, 17,506 vehicles were registered in April, a 5.7 per cent rise compared with 16,551 in 2009. Some 11,556 of these were new, compared with 7,555 in April last year, a 53 per cent increase.

Diesel cars continued to be popular with consumers, with 64.7 per cent of the private cars registered over the month using the fuel. Just over 30 per cent were petrol.
