Astronomers believe they may be witnessing a black hole being born as the core of a super-massive star collapses in on itself. They are watching a fireball in the nearby galaxy, ESO 184-82. The explosion looks like a supernova according to scientists from the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, the last gasp fireworks given off when very large stars die. There is a possibility however that the star is so big that it is actually imploding, crushing down into a black hole. Such an event was predicted by astronomers more than 10 years ago, but they didn't know what it might look like. The blast, detected on April 25th could be such an event.
