Phil Neville appears to have been earmarked for a central midfield role alongside Frank Lampard in tonight's friendly with Serbia and Montenegro at the Walker Stadium.
The Manchester United player's international career looked as if it was over after a year out of the international picture. But he was brought back into the fold for England's summer programme and won his 38th cap in the victory over South Africa in Durban 12 days ago.
An impressive performance would put the 26-year-old in contention for the vital Euro qualifier with Slovakia on June 11th.
It is a role he slotted into effectively with United last season after predominantly having been regarded before that as a versatile defender who could play on either flank.
Neville said: "I am just pleased to be involved with England again this summer. It has been a long time. It was nice to put on the shirt again in South Africa".
Lampard is also pushing to get to the forefront of Eriksson's plans and finally make his mark four years after his debut. The Chelsea midfielder was one of England's most impressive players when he came on as a substitute against the South Africans.
