An investigation has begun after an inspection revealed a pistol and ammunition is missing from one of the Naval Service's ships.

A routine ordnance inspection on board the LE Niamh yesterday showed that a whereabout of a HK USP pistol, 2 magazines and 100 rounds of 9mm amunition are unknown.

The ship is currently docked at the naval base in Haulbowline in Co Cork and both Military Police and gardaí are investigating the missing weapon.

A full inspection of all Naval Service ordnance has been undertaken and no other weapons or ammunition is missing.
