Dozens of cycling events will be held around the country as part of Ireland’s first National Bike Week in June.
The event, which takes places from June 14th to 21st, is being organised by cycling groups as well as State agencies and local authorities.
It will be opened in Dublin’s Phoenix Park and a mass cycle will later take place in Dublin city.
Events will also take place in Cork, Galway and Waterford. Free posters, instruction DVDs and service checks for bicycles will be available.
Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey called on communities to help promote cycling as a fun and healthy option and promised increased safety for cyclists on streets and roads.
“Cyclists matter. Just like other road users they deserve a safer, easier travelling experience," he said.
Earlier this month, the Government published Ireland’s first national cycle policy.
Mr Dempsey said he aims to fund sustainable travel initiatives in 2009 to encourage more people to cycle, walk or take public transport more often.
“We are going to invest over the coming years to make cycling a safer and more attractive alternative mode of transport,” he added.
Organisations involved in National Bike Week include the National Cyclist Lobby Group, the Dublin Cycling Campaign, an Taisce, Cycling Ireland, Fáilte Ireland, the Office of Public Works, the Dublin Transportation Office and the Road Safety Authority.
