A SOUND installation based on ancient musical instruments on Valentia Island in Co Kerry is proving a hit with locals and visitors.
The 15m-long rijnhoorn – based on the Celtic horn, the Swiss horn and the Tibetan horn – can be heard over 12km away. Dutch artist Andy ten Broek (37) said he chose the location on the edge of the Atlantic deliberately.
He was also attracted to the old landscape of Valentia. “The reason I put it here is because of the feeling of the end of the world and also because of the erosion of the land,” ten Broek said.
He was in search of “an ancient sound”. “And this is such an ancient land with the tetrapod prints and the humpback whale off the coast,” he added, referring to the 350-million-year-old dinosaur prints discovered in recent years on Valentia.
Landowner Patrick Curran said he was most happy to provide the site for the installation, which was due to be taken down yesterday.
