The jury in the Central Criminal Court trial of a Dublin man accused of murdering his girlfriend was sent to a hotel last night after failing to reach a verdict.

Mr Justice Carney told the jury they could resume their deliberations in the case in the morning. The jury had spent 2 1/2 hours deliberating without reaching a verdict.

It was the fifth day of the retrial of Mr Laurence Callaghan (34), from St Mary's Road, Crumlin, Dublin, who has pleaded not guilty to the murder, but guilty to the manslaughter, of Ms Janet Mooney (29), between September 17th and 19th, 1996.
