A man has been released in London after being arrested in connection with the murder in Reading, Berkshire of a 16-year-old girl whose family is from Co Mayo.

Shocked family members in Mount Jubilee, Bangor Erris were being comforted by neighbours after news broke of the murder of Mary-Ann Leneghan, whose father Bertie emigrated to England in 1972.

The teenager died from a single stab wound to the neck after she and a friend were assaulted by a gang of six men over a number of hours, in what detectives have described as a "horrendous attack".

Her 18-year-old friend who was shot and stabbed managed to crawl half a mile to raise the alarm and Mary-Ann's body was discovered in a park early on Saturday morning.

The teenager's 84-year-old grandmother Molly Leneghan, who lives in Mount Jubilee, told reporters she had not been informed of the full facts of what happened.

A Mass will be said this week for the 16-year-old at the parish church in Geesala. Fr Alan Munnelly said news of the murder had only broken on Sunday.

According to detectives, who have launched a murder investigation, the two teenagers were lured in "great distress" into a car parked outside a disused pub in Reading on Friday night. They were taken to a hotel nearby and assaulted over three hours by up to six men. They were then driven from the hotel to a park in the town where they were stabbed. Police could not confirm reports that the teenager's hair was shaved off and that she suffered burn wounds.

Mary-Ann's father described his daughter as a bright girl who had left school, become unemployed and been befriended by the "wrong crowd". She was due to take her GCSE exams this year and she wanted to go into nursing. Mr Leneghan, a building contractor, is separated from his wife Sue.

Det Superintendent Mark Warwick said: "We do believe there was a reason for this attack and we continue to work to find out what the precise motive was." Three men arrested in connection with the murder were released on bail over the weekend. A man was arrested following an early morning raid on three addresses in London yesterday. He was freed on bail last night.
