Gardaí have tonight launched a murder investigation after the post-mortem results on the body of man found earlier revealed he had died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The man's body was found face down in Ballinascorney woods on the Co Wicklow border by two hill walkers at about 10 a.m. this morning.

Gardaí said: "The deceased has been identified as a 39-year-old man from the Inchicore Area. His name will not be released until all immediate relatives are informed."

Earlier, the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, carried out a post-mortem on the man which found "death was due to a gunshot wound to the head".

Following the results of the post-mortem, Gardaí said tonight the investigation has been upgraded to a murder investigation.
