More than 100 MPs from all parties at Westminster and several members of the Oireachtas have joined peers, trade union general secretaries and representatives of the Irish community in Britain in a statement of support for the Belfast Agreement, writes Rachel Donnelly in London.

The statement calls on all politicians involved in the process to maintain the momentum for peace and reconciliation.

Initiated by three Labour MPs - the former shadow Northern Ireland secretary, Mr Kevin McNamara, Mr John McDonnell and Ms Maria Fyfe - the statement is entitled Friends of Ireland - Friends of the Good Friday Agreement, and reminds all parties to the agreement they were aware from the outset that its implementation would pose "challenges as great as those involved in achieving the original breakthrough".

Among the signatories of the Friends of Ireland document are Bob Geldof, comedian Jeremy Hardy, Nicholas Blake QC, former EU Commissioner Peter Sutherland, now chairman of Goldman Sachs International, and Lord Puttnam.
