THE Northern Ireland Secretary, Dr Mo Mowlam, has urged the US to continue its efforts to persuade the IRA to renew its ceasefire to allow Sinn Fein to enter the political talks.
She also emphasised that she wants the US efforts to continue in co-operation with the British and Irish governments, saying that "when we three work together, we work well". She frequently referred to the need to work with the Irish Government after her various meetings.
In an unplanned step, she requested a meeting with the Irish Ambassador, Mr Dermot Gallagher, at his residence despite a crowded schedule.
Dr Mowlam said the US President and politicians should tell the IRA that the new British government is "serious and has a window of opportunity".
Mr Quentin Thomas, the senior Northern Ireland Office official who met Sinn Fein this week, also briefed the press on his discussions. He said the gaps which exist on the issues such as what happens after a ceasefire, confidence building measures and a time-frame for the peace talks could yet be overcome.
