Catania - Mount Etna spewed lava and showered rocks and ash in a fiery display at the weekend but residents living near the volcano on the island of Sicily were not in danger.
No injuries were reported after an explosion rocked Europe's largest and most active volcano on Saturday, but some cars in villages on the volcano's slopes were damaged by the fallen volcanic debris.
A stream of lava measuring 1 km flowed down the main crater's south-east slope but local officials said it was heading towards an uninhabited valley.
