Motorists have been warned that overnight sleet and snow showers have left roads in a treacherous condition across the country.
Several sporting fixtures have been cancelled as a result of the weather. The much anticipated Galway v Kilkenny hurling fixture at Pearse Stadium has been postponedand the Limerick v Carlow football match at Carrick on Shannon has also been called off.
Met Éireann issued a severe weather alert last night warning of frost and snow over Connacht, Ulster and the northern half of Leinster.
Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are continuing to spread northeastwards as the day progresses and will give a covering of snow in places.
Temperatures have increased in many parts of the country, however, Met Éireann said that it expects a drop in termperatures to as low as -5°C later this evening. Slushy and slippery conditions remain the major problem facing motories, though snow is still lying in parts of the northeast.
AA Roadwatch is warning of treacherous conditions across the country, particularly in Wicklow, Kilkenny, Carlow, Longford and in western and southern areas.
Extra care is advised on secondary roads, over high ground and in sheltered areas and motorists are urged to reduce speed significantly and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front
Dublin Bus passengers have been advised to check in with the company's website as services may be disrupted by bad weather.
