A MAN is recovering in hospital after sustaining serious head injuries in a road rage incident during which he was beaten over the head with a weapon believed to be a hurley. The incident occurred in south Dublin at the weekend.
The victim was involved in a dispute with another driver at the junction of Tritonville Road, Sandymount Road, and Newbridge Avenue in Dublin 4 at about 7.30pm on Sunday.
Gardaí believe the man got out of his vehicle and attacked the other motorist before driving off.
The injured man, a 49-year-old from England who is working in Dublin, remains in Beaumont Hospital where he is receiving treatment for serious head injuries.
Gardaí say while his injuries are severe he is expected to survive.
“He is in a very bad way and he’s expected to stay in hospital for quite some time,” said one source.
It is unclear how or why the dispute arose but it is believed to have begun when one of the motorists became irate at the manner in which the other man was driving his car.
A number of people witnessed the attack and, while the suspect in the case drove off, gardaí have since learned his identity and he has been traced.
Gardaí in Irishtown investigating the attack have urged anybody who witnessed the incident or who may have been in the area at the time to come forward and speak to them.
The scene of the attack was sealed off on Sunday evening and underwent a technical examination by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.
