Motherwell were condemned to finishing bottom of the Scottish premier league when they lost 3-2 at home to Aberdeen.

However the Fir Park side could avoid relegation as first division champions Falkirk may not be allowed into the top flight because their ground does not meet premier league requirements.

Motherwell took an early lead through David Clarkson, but Aberdeen hit back with three goals in 15 first-half minutes from Leigh Hinds, Eric Deloumeaux and Paul Sheerin.

James McFadden pulled one back with a penalty six minutes from time, but it was too late for the hosts who must now wait for their fate to be decided on Friday.

With leaders Celtic preparing for Wednesday's UEFA Cup final against Porto, Rangers can draw level with their Glasgow rivals when they travel to Hearts on Sunday.

In Saturday's other games, fifth-placed Dunfermline Athletic drew 2-2 with Kilmarnock, the team one place above them, Hibernian won 2-1 at Livingston, and second-bottom Dundee United sealed a 1-0 victory at Partick Thistle to ensure their survival.

The draw virtually ended Kilmarnock's hopes of a European place as they are still three points behind Hearts with one match remaining.
