A woman injured in a house fire in Drogheda which claimed the lives of three of her sons has been discharged from hospital.
Kathleen McDonagh - whose sons James (8), Tony (16) and Martin (21) died after a fire consumed their home on the Moneymore Estate on Monday morning - was today released from St James’s Hospital in Dublin.
Her other son Eddie (13), who managed to escape by jumping out a window of the burning house, remains in a critical condition in Crumlin Children’s Hospital. The children’s father Anthony McDonagh was released from hospital on Tuesday.
Catholic primate Cardinal Seán Brady today signed a book of condolences opened for the three brothers at the borough council offices in Drogheda.
Cardinal Brady said:" Parents Kathleen and Anthony, and son Eddie, have experienced a devastation and loss that goes beyond words. My heart goes out to them. The suffering that they are experiencing is beyond our comprehension.
He said: "The bravery of both the emergency services and the neighbours of the McDonagh family demonstrate the spirit of the people of Drogheda. I pray that the McDonagh family, their friends and the local community can find the strength to bear this awful tragedy."
