The elderly mother of British hostage Mr Ken Bigley has collapsed again at her home and been taken to hospital.

Paramedics were called to treat Dublin-born Ms Lil Bigley (86) at her home in Walton, Liverpool this afternoon. She was taken to hospital by ambulance after they spent half an hour with her in the house.

Former Beirut hostage Mr Terry Waite was with her in the house after arriving at lunchtime on a private visit to show his support for the family.

Meanwhile Mr Bigley's brother Paul is expected to take part in a Labour Party conference fringe meeting tomorrow evening.

He has previously accused the US of "sabotaging" his 62-year-old sibling's release after they said Dr Rihab Taha would not be freed despite an earlier announcement to the contrary by Iraqi authorities.

He has also criticised the Prime Minister of "only going through the diplomatic instruction book" in his efforts to free his brother.
