GARDAÍ IN Limerick were last night investigating the death of a young mother who died after she fell from a top floor window of a five-storey building in the city.

Audrey Ann Coffey (25), from Carnane, Fedamore, Co Limerick, was found impaled on railings in front of the apartment building on Clare Street at about 1am yesterday. The 25-year-old mother of one was visiting a friend who lives in an apartment in the Georgian building when the tragedy occurred.

A Garda spokesman said initial inquiries indicated there was nothing to suggest a suspicious factor in the death.

A man in his 30s has been questioned regarding the incident.

The dead woman lived in Co Limerick with her parents and her two-year-old child.

It was the second time a person had died after being impaled on railings in front of the same apartments in Limerick city.

In September 2005, Michael McNamara (19), from Meelick in Co Limerick, fell from a drain pipe attached to the building.

It is believed the teenager had forgotten his keys and was trying to gain access to a flat by climbing up the drainpipe when it came away from the wall.

Despite his serious injuries he managed to free himself from the railings and staggered some 50 yards before he collapsed. He was pronounced dead less than an hour later at St John’s hospital.
