A young mother who had to stop breast feeding her newborn baby because of pain after an accident was awarded more than £43,500 in court yesterday.

Ms Suzanne Payne (30), from Caherdavin Heights in Limerick, had to have part of her lower spine removed after a car accident on the Limerick Shannon road in January 1991, the High Court in Limerick heard.

The mother of two told her counsel, Mr Gerard Tynan SC, that she was seven months pregnant at the time of the accident.

Mrs Payne sued her husband, Robert, who was driving their car when it skidded on ice. She also sued Mr Brian Murray, of Woodpark, Newmarket on Fergus, whose car crashed into their vehicle after the skid. Mr Justice Vivian Lavin ruled that liability was totally against Mr Murray.
