A Moscow court today began hearings claims for compensation from former hostages and the families of victims who died in October's theatre siege.
Seven plaintiffs are demanding $1 million each. Their lawyer said that under Russia's new anti-terrorism law, authorities should pay moral and material damages to the victims.
The siege of the Moscow theatre by Chechen rebels ended with over 150 people dead after Russian commandos stormed the building, killing the 41 hostage-takers. At least 129 of the hostages also died from the effects of a narcotic gas used to knock out the militants.
More families are expected to join the legal battle, and it is predicted the hearings could continue for years.
