The Morris Tribunal has sought three more months to complete its findings into garda corruption in Co Donegal in the 1990s, it emerged today.
Justice Frederick Morris had been due to issue his final two reports at the end of June but the Government today granted him a time extension until September.
The long-running inquiry focused on the death of cattle dealer Richie Barron, in Raphoe, Co Donegal in October 1996.
Justice Morris wrote to the Government requesting the three-month time extension and it was approved at today's Cabinet meeting," said a Government spokesman.
A previous Morris Tribunal report released in early May found rogue garda detectives conjured up evidence and made bogus arrests during the botched murder investigation.
Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan was accused by Opposition parties of trying to minimise the public impact of the embarrassing findings by releasing it on the day new Taoiseach Brian Cowen took office.
Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy later said he profoundly regretted that members of the extended McBrearty family was mistreated by the force.
Mr Murphy also said he was deeply disappointed that the Tribunal also found that some of his officers did not co-operate fully with the inquiry.
