Chelsea footballer Jody Morris has been charged in connection with an alleged nightclub assault, Scotland Yard said.

Morris (23) was charged with affray and actual bodily harm after he attended Belgravia police station in central London by appointment, a police spokesman said.

"Jody Morris has been fined two weeks wages for being on licensed premises two days before a game even though he was not fit," Chelsea managing director Colin Hutchinson said today on the club's official website. "Chelsea will wait until the outcome of the legal proceedings before making any further comment".

The midfielder from Epsom, Surrey, will appear before Horseferry Road magistrates tomorrow along with team mate John Terry (21) and Wimbledon defender Desmond Byrne (20) who were charged with the same offences last week.

The charges followed an alleged incident between a member of staff and customers at the private members' Wellington Club in central London on January 4th.

Morris, a former England Under-21 international, had been enjoying a night out with his friends where they were reported to be celebrating the birth of his daughter.

All three have been released on bail.
