The Moriarty tribunal has said it has received 170 pages of documents in relation to property deals in the UK, some of which contained information which had not previously been brought to its attention.

In an opening statement this morning, counsel for the tribunal John Coughlan for the tribunal said it had received a file of correspondence on Wednesday July 29th about the property transactions.

Some of the transactions in question have been linked to the former government minister Michael Lowry.

Mr Coughlan said the file contained exchanges of correspondence between solicitors for a Northern Ireland businessman Kevin Phelan, and solicitors for accountant Aidan Phelan in 2002.

Aidan Phelan acknowledged to the tribunal today in evidence that he had not provided it with a complete set of documentation. However, he said it was not his intention to mislead the tribunal.

He said some of the documents, if put into the public domain , would be “mischievous and create mayhem”.

He said that Kevin Phelan had set out to do damage to all the parties and that he had made vexatious complaints to various professional bodies.
