Tottenham defender Stephen Carr endured a miserable start to his Premiership campaign after limping off against Everton today with a suspected hamstring injury.
Carr was ruled out of last season’s entire Premiership campaign and the World Cup finals after a series of knee problems but Mick McCarthy has recalled the defender to his squad for Wednesday’s international friendly against Finland in Helsinki.
The defender’s participation in that match is now doubtful after he went off on 44 minutes when he appeared to pull a hamstring as he tried to clear under pressure from Everton’s 16-year-old debutante Wayne Rooney.
It is unclear how long Carr will be sidelined.
Elsewhere, former Republic of Ireland and Manchester United star Denis Irwin scored from a 20 yard free kick for his new club Wolverhampton Wanderers in their 2-0 home win over Burnley.
Irwin, who this week criticised former colleague Roy Keane for the timing of his controversial autobiography, last scored in United’s 2-1 Champions League defeat to Anderlecht in October 2000.
