The Colombian scorched round the Gilles Villeneuve circuit and is joined on the front row of the grid by Ferrari's Michael Schumacher for tomorrow’s eighth round of the world championship.

Montoya earned the sixth pole position of his career, his third this season, after clocking a best lap of 1min 12.836sec in rainy conditions.

Michael Schumacher managed 1:13.018 and teammate Rubens Barrichello of Brazil joined Ralf Schumacher of Williams on the second row.

The McLaren of David Coulthard, who won the last Grand Prix in Monaco and who was fastest over Friday's two free practice sessions, had to be content with eighth spot alongside Germany's Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld on the fourth row.

The two Jordan's of Giancarlo Fisichella and Takuma Sato will start in sixth and fifteenth place respectively. -AFP
