The former Northern Editor with the Sunday Tribune, Mr Ed Moloney, has agreed a settlement with his former employer over his dismissal last November.
A statement from the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) said Mr Moloney would continue his career in the United States where he currently lives.
"The terms of the settlement are full and final and include compensation over and above Mr Moloney's statutory rights," the NUJ statement said.
The Sunday Tribuneterminated Mr Moloney's contract on November 1st, amid angry claims and counter-claims about his working relationship with the paper.
Irish Secretary of the NUJ Mr Séamus Dooley said: "Ed Moloney is a journalist of rare courage and commitment.
"Journalists everywhere remain in his debt for the stand which he took in defence of the protection of journalistic sources. We wish him well."
