London - The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Paul Condon, will admit that his officers have made mistakes in the way they have handled racially-motivated crimes when he gives evidence in the second phase of the public inquiry into the investigation of the death of the black teenager, Stephen Lawrence, later today, writes Rachel Donnelly.

Sir Paul will provide details of a new programme designed to prevent racially-motivated crime in London in a 10-page document produced by the Metropolitan Police Service, in addition to giving oral evidence to the inquiry team.

Meanwhile, at the Labour Party conference in Blackpool, the Sinn Fein president, Mr Gerry Adams, told delegates that people in Northern Ireland understood why Lawrence was killed. "It was racist. They understand why the police didn't want to deal with the problem - it was racialism."
