An air and sea search off the west Cork coast was called off this morning after a missing kayaker turned up safe and well.

The man, who was on holidays in the area, was reported to be in difficulty in the Lambs Head area on the north shore of Kenmare Bay in the Beara Peninsula yesterday evening.

The Castletownbere Lifeboat, the Shannon based helicopter and the Derrynane community inshore rescue boat began to search for the man last night.

Locally based fishing boats also joined in the search, which was stood down at 3.00am.

The man eventually made his own way ashore at Eyeries village near Castletownbere at about 4.00am and raised the alarm at a house.

He was medically assessed by lifeboat crew and did not require hospitalisation.

“We are all delighted at the successful outcome of the operation and are very pleased that the lone kayaker survived the incident,” Derrynane rescue service  spokesman David O'Mahony said.
