A statue decapitated by late-night revellers was reunited with its missing head yesterday following an appeal to the public.

Community leaders in Kiltimagh, Co Mayo, expressed delight that the granite head of the late 18th century poet Anthony Raftery, best known for his lyrical poem Mise Raifteirí an File, had been located.

Gardaí had been alerted to the incident some days ago following a party in Sculpture Park at the former railway station where the 6ft 4in sculpture was located.

Following a tip-off yesterday morning, the head was recovered in the Kilkelly area, about six miles from Kiltimagh.
