Burnley - The body of a missing four-month-old girl was found yesterday in a canal by police divers. A woman has been arrested by police in Burnley, Lancashire, on suspicion of murder following the discovery. She is understood to be the baby's mother, who reported that the infant had been taken with her pram from outside toilets in the town centre four hours earlier.
A big police search was mounted following the child's disappearance. Reports from members of the public led them to the Leeds-Liverpool canal in the town, where the Silver Cross pram was found abandoned nearby.
The woman had told police she discovered the baby girl and the pram missing at 9.30 a.m. and had then walked home to telephone them.
