Minister confirms abolition of 11-plus examination

Northern Minister Ms Jane Kennedy has confirmed the abolition of the 11-plus transfer exam.

Northern Minister Ms Jane Kennedy has confirmed the abolition of the 11-plus transfer exam.

Ms Kennedy said she planned to take forward the Review of Post-Primary Education, which was commissioned by Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness in the devolved administration.

She said she aimed to develop new "fairer" arrangements which will raise standards and provide an education system fit for a modern society.

"The responses to the extensive consultation undertaken by the Department of Education on the Burns Report showed widespread demand for change," she said.

"In particular, the consultation indicated an emerging consensus, including amongst the political parties, for the ending of Transfer Tests.

"I wish to build on this and I am confirming today that the Transfer Tests will be abolished.

"At the same time, I want to make it clear that no decisions have been taken about academic selection," she added.

Ms Kennedy said too many children have been disadvantaged by the Transfer Tests and this could not be allowed to continue.

"Schools, parents and children need clarity on future transfer arrangements and I am therefore determined that we continue to work towards abolition of the Transfer Tests as soon as is practical," she said.

"By working with our education partners and keeping our focus on the interests of the child, I am confident that we can build on the consensus that has emerged from the consultation process and develop a modern and fair education system that enables all children to fulfil their potential."

Ms Kennedy said she would be meeting political parties and education partners in the coming weeks to discuss the way forward.
