Miami - The Miami authorities appointed the city's first Hispanic police chief, Raul Martinez, to replace William O'Brien, who resigned last week following the Elian Gonzalez custody battle.
He was introduced to reporters by city manager Don Warshaw, who was sacked by Miami Mayor Joe Carollo on Thursday but will remain in office until next Sunday. Media reports indicate Warshaw was dismissed for refusing to fire O'Brien, who failed to alert the Cuban-American mayor about the federal raid to remove Elian from his Miami relatives' home. O'Brien later resigned.
